Sunflowers Search the Heavens for Light – Story Behind the Brand

Ok guys, full disclosure – this article is the result of a branding exercise my creative team tasked me with. I just can’t get over it, I am the young sunflower! I am willing to admit it can get dark, and we inevitably have to “get down”, but I am always searching for the light.

An international symbol of warmth and positivity

Most people see the sunflower as a sign of hope and warmth, positivity and strength. Going deeper, the sunflower has vast association with strong bonds and lasting happiness — the idea of always looking for the light.

“Sunflowers emit positive energy and good vibes. Sunflower arrangements are the perfect gift for joyous occasions, such as new business launches, birthdays and graduations — beautifully arranged for every moment you share with your loved ones.”

A Christian symbol that embraces authenticity

In Christian scripture, the sunflower symbolizes faith and adoration for all that is, the true faith and loyalty to something that is much bigger and brighter than themselves. In esoteric Christianity (I had to look it up too, see definition below), the sunflower is a symbol of God’s love. It relates to self-respect, which means being authentic and embracing your own individuality.

Esoteric Christianity refers to the study of the occult or mystic esoteric knowledge related to the inner teachings of Christianity. The term is generally associated with the Essenes and later the Rosicrucians. In esoteric Christianity, the religion of the Christ is taught as a mystery religion.

What does the sunflower mean in healing?

Getting literal, a sunflower’s seeds provide nutrition that is loved by both humans and wildlife alike. The sees are considered to be the best whole food source of Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes, brain cells, and lower the risk for chronic diseases. Did you know that sunflower seeds offer two times more protein than walnuts and pecans? And six times more Vitamin E than peanuts!

As I dug into the many meanings and associations with the sunflower, it just kept getting better and better. I discovered that in ancient times, Priestesses would wear and carry this for ceremonies as a power symbol for healing and the energy of the stomach and solar plexus. It helps you to see the truth of your life and bolsters your strength to be assertive, and Sunflower is also connected to fire, which helps things to transform quickly.

EVERYTHING happens for a reason.

I AM the fire sign in astrology! Plus, people who know me can attest to the fact that I wear a yellow shirt or a yellow pendant that hangs at my solar plexus when I want to evoke creativity in my writing or have a positive meeting. I actually kicked off my branding work with a meeting with the creative director wearing my yellow shirt. What’s memorable is that it was inside out, LMAO!!!

It dawned on me that this event was a metaphor. That I bring imperfect authenticity that is open to change. I am ass backwards, eager to pounce on ideas and concepts, but thrive on relationships the help me find the light.

So we have to be okay with getting down before we can get up. The sunflower’s story begins with a tale of unrequited love.

Sunflower: The story of this summer goddess begins with search for love

“In the end, she was transformed into a sunflower, a plant which turns its face toward the sun as it moves across the sky each day,” said University of Missouri horticulturist David Trinklein.
